Characteristics of the German Department

The main features of the department in terms of educational objectives, core competencies and curriculum design are: internationalization, informatization, integration, diversified and systematic curriculum planning, and a rigorous mechanism for assessing German language proficiency.

 

Students:

(1.) Internationalization: exchange program for junior year students, summer language course at the University of Trier and the University of München, and “German Corner” where you can interact with native speakers.

(2.) Strict German proficiency testing mechanism: Basic German Grammar and Basic German Reading are listed as “Intensive Courses”, blocking system, and German proficiency testing threshold for graduation.

(3.) Diversified learning and counseling mechanism:

  • Academics: German Corner, German language competitions and activities, counseling by seniors, individual counseling for physically and mentally challenged students, and counseling for foreign students.
  • Career and Employment: Seminars on further education and employment, sharing of career experiences by seniors, and Company Visits.

(4.) Informationization: e-learning resources, e-administration: teaching platform, multimedia teaching, etc.

(5.) Diversified Learning and Counseling Mechanism: German Corner, Academic Counseling.

 

Curriculum:

Diversified and systematic curriculum planning: The curriculum is planned in four directions: language, humanities, practical and interdisciplinary.

(1.) Integration of freshman and sophomore basic German courses and junior and senior related courses.

(2.) English language proficiency: two years of English language class is compulsory; passing the English language test (Intermediate) or equivalent is the graduation threshold.

(3.) Futuristic Courses: All students are required to take “AI and Programming Language”, “Exploring Sustainability”, “Global Outlook”, “Global Technology Revolution”, ”Futures Studies”.

 

Career Development

This department aims at cultivating German language proficiency of students and their abilities in independent learning, critical thinking, intercultural communication, interdisciplinarity learning, and international perspective. All graduates of the department are required to take the foreign language proficiency examination, and the vast majority of students are able to pass this test, which is quite in line with the department's educational objectives in terms of professional competence in German.

1.Continued Education: 

-domestic: 

(1.) German relevant: Tamkang University-Graduate Institute of European Studies, FuJen University and Soochow University Department of German Language and Culture, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology Department of German, etc.

(2.) Others: Graduate Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations, Institute of Linguistics, etc.

-overseas:

Master or PHD program in Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States, etc.

2. Employment:

-domestic:

(1.) Public Servant: Diplomatic personnel, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan External Trade Development Council, Government Information Office, etc.

(2.) Business: International business, License Company, Airline, Tourist Guide, etc.

(3.) Interdisciplinarity careers: IT Companies, Shipping Companies, Import-Export Companies, Travel Agency, Magazines editing, publishing, etc.

-overseas:

overseas missions: Special examination for journalism and foreign affairs, or assignment by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Education and Foreign Trade Association.

– Career Paths for German Graduates: 

With the exception of the above, the current industry is ever-changing. Instead of being limited to the career path that is perceived to be uniquely German, you can find your own breakthrough by combining your interests in cross-disciplinary applications (science and technology, business, culture, education, etc.) with your linguistic strengths and make your mark.
